The foundation of Strain Slattery Barkley & Co., CPAS, P.C. began in 1924 when Robert VanBoskirk and Calvin B. Remington founded one of the first accounting firms in Lincoln, Nebraska. Their initial emphasis was audits of counties and cities. As the firm began to grow in the 1930’s and 1940’s, the area of service was expanded to Kansas and Iowa with the industrial emphasis on bakeries and creameries.

During 1953, William Fry, Leland VanBoskirk and Don Trumble became partners in the firm. Robert VanBoskirk died in 1953, and in 1962 the other founding partner, Calvin B. Remington, retired. Fred Reese and Arnold White were admitted to the firm at this time. Two of the larger clients during this time were Crete Mills and Cushman Motors.

During 1973, the firm of VanBoskirk, Fry & Trumble split into two new firms, one of which was Fry, White & Guszak formed by William Fry, Arnold White and Paul Guszak. In 1978, William Fry retired and William V. Strain was admitted to the firm. In 1983, James R. Slattery was admitted to the firm followed by Shaun Barkley and Laura Lawrence in 1990, and Ed Bates and Rachel Ficek in 2003.

In 1991, Arnold White retired and the name of the firm was changed to Strain, Guszak & Co., P.C.

During the 1990’s, the Firm greatly expanded the services it offers to the telecommunications industry, including┬áproviding regulatory and legislative oversight for a number of independent Nebraska telephone companies.

In 2001 following Paul Guszak’s retirement, the shareholders voted to change the name from Strain, Guszak & Co., P.C. to Strain Slattery Barkley & Co., CPAs, P.C.

On January 1, 2015 William Strain transitioned from shareholder to a director in the firm.

Strain Slattery Barkley & Co., CPAS, P.C. and its predecessors have served Lincoln and the surrounding areas for more than 80 years. We are proud of our heritage and look forward to serving current and future clients for generations to come.
